The equipment and its placement work together
Choose a larger accessible unit with ground-level entry and interior grab bars. Before booking, request the manufacturer, model, and ADA configuration. A wheelchair-size label alone does not verify the door opening, turning space, fixture clearances, or the route to the unit.
An exact manufacturer reference
For comparison, Satellite Industries lists the Freedom at 66 in wide × 86.5 in deep × 90.5 in high, with a 32.7 in wide door opening and a 35-gallon tank in its ADA configuration. The manufacturer separately labels its optional 68-gallon configuration non-ADA-compliant. This reference is not confirmation of the model supplied for your rental.
Access is a route, not just a unit
For covered public events, ADA §213.2 Exception 3 requires accessible portable units in each cluster. In whole numbers, plan at least 1 accessible unit for every 20 units or part of 20 in each cluster. Two clusters of 10 need 1 accessible unit in each cluster, for 2 total. Count them within the total, rather than automatically adding them on top.
A compliant layout also needs an accessible approach, door maneuvering space, required grab bars, and fixture clearances. ADA §304 allows a 60-inch-diameter turning circle or a compliant T-shaped turn. A wide cabin alone is not proof of compliance. Coordinate California and venue-specific requirements with the responsible authority.
An accessible-rental quote example
One multi-week quote listed 2 accessible units at $343 each, plus $56.58 in taxes and fees: $343 + $343 + $56.58 = $742.58. Delivery, removal, and weekly service were included in that particular agreement. The same-day route could supply standard units, but the required accessible units were scheduled for the next morning.
Yorba Linda placement checks
- Use firm, stable, slip-resistant ground connected to a usable accessible route. Loose mulch is not an accessible-route solution simply because a unit can stand on it.
- Do not place the doorway against a curb, narrow garden path, or steep driveway transition.
- Keep door maneuvering space clear of sinks, bins, cars, and event furniture.
- Check the planned route again after rain or ground changes.
Combine the equipment plan with appropriate handwashing and delivery access.
